It’s the most precious pearl / The mother over the earth The mother over the earth / Is the most precious pearl It’s a very painful sorrow / For the one that doesn’t have one Where are you, loving mother? / Who could give you life again?

~~~ I live the agony of waiting In this cold prison Without my mama Without my papa My heart is dying Lights are always on So that we cannot sleep With what they call food It’s a miracle to survive I’m a child without protection Of my parents I am separated This abuse now lives in my being I’m condemned to live without tenderness In this twenty first century More than a hundred years singing The Corrido keeps telling Stories of sorrow Stories of despair Songs of Revolution Songs of the working class Songs of the ones that died struggling Of hunger, cold or heat, crossing Fly fly little dove Fly and cross the border Go and tell the ones that don't understand How hard it is to leave your country In Guatemala and Honduras Even Mexico and Salvador Where peace is not lived And only horror reigns Destroyed democracies Military interventions Organized crime, Leaving behind immigrants And thousands of refugees I dream of my free America Not the American dream And I’m condemned Without a single human right to help me Ladies and gentlemen I’m saying goodbye with this song There are the ones living the tragedies And there are the ones who just talk about them Fly fly little bird Fly to that fig tree This song is for the children That cry there, on the border

There, just before the dawn A laughter was heard A laughter was heard There, just before the dawn It was the evil witch Flying on her broom She was flying on her broom Aiming to the moon, ay mama Beautiful witch, seductress witch Cover my whole body with kisses When the dawn arrives And tell me, and tell me and you tell me How many little creatures have you sucked in? No one, no one, no one, why? I’m not Chupacabras, you are confused No one, no one, no one, why? It’s you, the only one I want to eat We shouldn’t fear the dead ones Nor the captive ghosts Nor the captive ghosts We shouldn’t fear the dead ones Even less, the beautiful witches and their wisdom Nor even sinister spells Nor the elder healers It’s some that’s living we have to fear, ay mama And tell me, and tell me, and tell me why In front of the mirror your image is not seen? I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you and tell you again That I see myself there It’s you, the one who cannot see And tell me, and tell me, and you tell me How many little creatures have you sucked in? No one, no one, no one, I don’t know It’s you, the only one I want to eat!

UNTRAPT 03:35
Take it on down when you drop your gown No longer frown cuz you’re no longer bound You heare your spirit sounding, leaping and bounding You feel it rounding the corner Your former dormer is now unfolding The golden chair is now rolling Lolling and tolling, doling and holy

about

During the worldwide COVID-19 Pandemic, two powerful music ensembles and a digital technologist joined forces to create a multimedia project based on research of the role of women in Mexican and Latin American culture through story and song. That research led director Madeleine Sosin to hone a story asking deeper questions.

Inspired by The Chalice and the Blade by archaeologist Riane Eisler, ¿Mujer o Bruja? (Woman or Witch?) was created by a stellar crew:
The Tiptons Sax Quartet (AD, Jessica Lurie, Sue Orfield, Tina Richerson with percussionist Elizabeth Pupo Walker), Latin American music duo Correo Aéreo (Abel Rocha and Madeleine Sosin) and creative technologist Jing ‘Jude’ Dai.

After a year of video conferencing, the group met in Seattle in October, 2021 to hone, finalize and present the piece. It was featured at the Earshot Jazz Festival, and co-sponsored by Non-Sequitur. The ensemble went on to record and mix the audio at Stone Gossard’s Studio LITHO in Seattle.

¿Mujer o Bruja? was made possible with the support of a great tech crew, Nonsequitur, Earshot Jazz Festival, On The Boards, 4Culture, and a generous grant from Jazz Road, a national initiative of South Arts, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Rehearsal support: Seattle Drum School & Kenyon Hall.
