Immersion Composition Society Session Sunday 26 April, 2020

Second composition of the day.

Part of a series of compositions written inspired by towns in which I've lived. Jazz India enrolled me in their Jazz India Vocal Institute in the Fall of 1997. I studied thumri with master singer Dhanashree Pandit-Rai. Meanwhile, I stayed in the 5-star Oberoi Hotel, and to pay for room and board I sang in the Bayview Lounge there 5 nights a week, 2 sets a night with George and the Soft Rock Revolution.

The chords/melody are loosely based on the number of infected and dead in India when I started this project. (12,759/420).

I wondered what the words should be. Then I remembered that Princess Di had just died in an auto accident, and Candle In The Wind quickly became her anthem. Almost every evening an audience member would hand me a request for that song in the form of a folded up piece of paper. I found Candle in the Wind darkly humorous, and appropriate for the general theme of this series.
