about
2nd of 3 songs created during Immersion Composition Society Day on Sunday May 12, 2019.
Tone Dogs first played in Novi Sad, Serbia in June, 1990, before the civil war in the Balkans. Djordje our host met us at the train station on his bicycle, and guided us onto a bus with our gear (2 basses, guitar, sax, trap case and luggage) going towards the venue.
I’ll never forget the image of Djordje riding his bike behind us, trying to keep up, and waving at us when it was time to get off the bus. Later, Djordje fled the war to Amsterdam, became a junkie, returned, and eventually his mother found him dead of an overdose.
I adore this city on the Danube (Duna) in the Vojvodina, and through the years have met many inspiring people from there. During the war, my heart was ripped to shreds thinking of all the folks we'd met on tour...
I took this picture of the moon in Novi Sad a few years ago.
lyrics
Arrived by train in Novi Sad
Our host Djordje put us on a bus
He rode behind us on his bicycle
He waved us off for the stop to the Yellow House
Novi Sad, so beautiful
Falling asleep to the strums of the tamburica orkestar
Silver tones floating up to the moon
On the Duna
Tito died, war was born
Djordje fled to Amsterdam
To drown his pain, he changed his course
Traded his bicycle for the white horse
Darkened minds, blackened skies
Will we ever above this rise?
Hate is a habit hard to break
When all is done for god's sake
