Sretan Ruže Dan (Happy Roses Day)

about

Normally, one says 'sretan rođendan' (happy birthday). I came up with 'sretan ruže dan' (in my mind, happy rose day). As this song came into being and I became obsessed with roses, the birthday boy told me his mother is named Ružica (little rose). Sudbina. Destiny...

Since songs about roses are popular in the Balkans, I added the children's song 'Ja sam mala ruža' (I am a little rose) on accordion at the beginning, even though the chords are wrong, haha.

Then I remembered the Nisqually Earthquake Rose. The earthquake occurred in 2001 near Olympia, Washington (100km south of Seattle). 7.1 on the Richter Scale, lasting 35 seconds. No joke. Even in Seattle there was substantial damage. Earthquakes have the craziest deepest sound imaginable. One could feel the huge waves rippling through the earth.

After the quake subsided, some folks in a New Age shop near the epicenter started cleaning up. The place was filled with a jumble of crystals and other New Age artifacts. There was also a bowl filled with sand, with a pendulum above. Normally one pushes the pendulum, and it makes a spirograph, guided by the electromagnetic forces of the earth.

But this time the deep resonance & motion of that earthquake created a most beautiful rose shape supported by contrary waves.

lyrics

Ruža zna
Ruža zna zašto

Suptilne niti koje sudbina plete
Prilagodite njihovu snagu iza naših leđa
Ispravljanje naših posrtanja
Dok se ne zna nepoznato

Klatno koje visi preko peska
Stvara spirograf kada se kreće rukom čoveka
Ali haos zemljotresa će stvoriti savršenu ružu

(ENGLISH)
The rose knows
The rose knows why

The subtle threads that destiny weaves
Flex their strength behind our backs
Righting our stumbling ways
Until unknown becomes known

A pendulum dangling over a bed of sand
Makes spirographs when moved by the hand of man
But the chaos of an earthquake will create a perfect rose
