Trieste (3175 / 317)

from Amy Denio: PANDEMONIUM by Amy Denio / Spoot Music

about

I’ve played and stayed in Trieste countless times, ever since I played solo at Teatro Miele on a Knitting Factory tour in 1993. In 2001, Gianpaolo Rampini and I created a quintet playing ‘musica da camera e cucina’ (chamber and kitchen quintet) called Quintetto alla Busara. Our repertoire was my chamber music inspired by Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities. Our rehearsals were perfumed by the Illy coffee roasting factory at the bottom of the hill.

This song was incredibly ugly and unwilling for quite a while before It turned a corner and became an exotica piece. Percussionist Nonda Trimis volunteered to add a samba batteria section.

Based on the number of people infected and who have died from Corona Virus in Friuli/Venezia Giulia on 5/17. I used my musical alphabet to create the notes for Trieste: Ab F# B E G# Ab E. The piece kept mutating from there.

Conceived, performed & produced by Amy Denio using Reaper at Spoot Studios in West Seattle.

AD: voice, Stratocaster guitar, G&L bass, Selmer Mark VI alto sax, Buffet clarinet, American Tourister briefcase played by hand, bottle of Black Elderberry lozenges, bag of died plantain chips.
