This simple piano idea came to me between students ~ based on my love of harmonic minor & the relationship of major to minor, happy to sad. When I started to record it, I realized I wanted to make a piece about my ruminations on the role of death in our lives.

Elizabeth Detonator Beth Lawrence, King Leah Gold and I created an improvising vocal trio called Les Voix Vulgaires.

Breast cancer spelled the end of DB's life in 2016. Later that year I was diagnosed with a slow-growing ductal breast cancer which has been in remission since treatment finished. A few years later, King Leah was diagnosed with breast cancer. It gradually spread through her body and by the summer of 2021 Leah had fallen into a coma. One night I sat with her and took her hand. To my amazement, she responded. She passed on early the next morning.

Coastal Salish wisdom teaches that death is the Great Change, rather than being The End. Spirit finally unfolds to its greatest potential, no longer trapped by human limitations. Each of us is like a chrysalis, hindered by various mental and physical limitations, but our spirits have the potential to unfold into limitless beauty.

Dedicated to Detonator Beth and King Leah.
