Long-time friends and collaborators Amy Denio, Roberto Fega and Adriano Lanzi have been weaving a web of rhythmic whimsy and unknowable sounds for many years. After the Pandemic lifted, they met in Rome to play a trio concert at Boogie Club on a wet wintry evening. The club was packed with friends and colleagues as well as several tables of enthusiastic youth celebrating someone’s eighteenth birthday. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial.

The concert was recorded by Max Costa, a former pilot for AlItalia which inspired Denio to name the trio Gli Autopiloti. Improvising is an invitation to go on autopilot; muscle memory rules action and the noisy mind is muted while following the path of least resistance.

Amici e collaboratori di lunga data, Amy Denio, Roberto Fega e Adriano Lanzi hanno tessuto nel corso degli anni una rete di capricci ritmici e suoni inconoscibili. Quando la pandemia ha allentato la presa, si sono incontrati a Roma per un concerto in trio al Boogie Club in una piovosa serata invernale. Il club era gremito di amici e colleghi, oltre a diversi tavoli di giovani entusiasti che festeggiavano il diciottesimo compleanno di qualcuno. L’atmosfera era rilassata e conviviale.

Il concerto è stato registrato da Max Costa, un ex-pilota Alitalia che ha ispirato Denio chiamare il trio Gli Autopiloti. Improvvisare è un invito ad andare con il pilota automatico. La memoria muscolare governa l’azione e la mente rumorosa è zittita mentre segue il percorso di minor resistenza.

Jazz fusion-y avant-garde goodness! Like if the Mahavishnu Orchestra did a bunch of acid and just jammed freely (and replaced the fiddle with saxes). The progression of the music is a trip in itself. Deidre House
