My Funny Valentine was one of my father's favorite songs ~ he collected as many versions as he could find. He'd often play it during our peaceful summers in Vermont, and I loved hearing the crickets providing a sleepy sonic background. At age 80 Dadso became a jazz DJ at the community radio station in Traverse City. He dedicated an entire program to the song.
I arranged and recorded this chestnut for a compilation in 2018. I added crickets to evoke the calm that this song brought my father and me. The producer never released the CD, so Jerry King recently took over the helm of this sonic ship and renamed the compilation ZZAJ: Jazz From the 23rd Century. Coming soon!
Other artists on the compilation include:
Henry Kaiser, Alfred Harth, Dereck Higgins, Dave Newhouse, Geoff Leigh, Anthony Coleman, Brian Woodbury, Pete Prown, John Shirley & Fred Hodshon, Haco, Intige Taluure, Paul Sears, Elliott Sharp, Shawn Persinger, Leando Kalen, Forrest Fang & Joseph Benzola, Martin Archer, Tom Djll, Nick Didkovsky, David Moss, Jerry & Michele King
I dedicate this recording to Dadso. Cheers!
lyrics
My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?
But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay, little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day
